WRESTLE-OFF GUIDELINES

1. The coaches will select a preliminary team. The goal is to have the team posted 2 weeks before the
first team tournament date to allow enough time for wrestle-offs.

2. The preliminary team is selected based on the wrestler’s team record from the previous season. If
two wrestlers are at the same weight class, and both wrestled team the previous season, the one with
the better record from the previous season will be the initially named team wrestler.

3. Once the preliminary team is posted, your wrestler must notify the coaches that he would like to
challenge for a specific weight. The coaches will then weigh the wrestler to confirm that the wrestler is
not more than 2 pounds over the challenged weight. Byron Youth Wrestling DOES NOT at any time
advocate that a wrestler cut weight.

7. For only the first wrestle off of the season, if two team wrestlers from the previous season are at the
same weight, the starting position is determined in a best of 3 series of matches. After the first wrestle
off, the challenger must defeat the starter twice.

8. Wrestle offs will take place every 3-4 weeks. The coaches MUST be notified prior to the wrestle-off
practice if a wrestler will not be there. Failure to do so will cause the wrestler to lose their team
position until the next wrestle-off.

9. If a wrestler cannot make the wrestle-off practice, they will lose their spot on the team until the next
wrestle off date, unless the coaches are previously notified. The coaches reserve the right to make
exceptions for extenuating circumstances (illness, family vacation, etc.), and these wrestle-offs will be
completed at the next practice. The coaches MUST be notified of these situations prior to the wrestle-
off practices, or the wrestler will lose their team position until the next wrestle-off.

In order to challenge for a varsity spot, wrestlers must:

1. Have no missed practices or made up any missed practices (Poyner Mile)
2. Have no disciplinary issues (detention/ISS) for the week.
3. The coaches reserve the right to move (ʺbumpʺ) wrestlers to different weight classes on the day of the match in order to obtain better pairings for the team as a whole. This maintains the component of wrestling as a ʺteamʺ sport. The safety and welfare of the wrestler will always be given first consideration.
4. Wrestlers will be ʺseededʺ according to common wrestling criteria. After wrestle‐offs are completed, the ʺVarsityʺ wrestler will be considered the ʺtop seedʺ for the next wrestle‐off.
5. Wrestle‐offs will be a "best of three" series of matches refereed by a coach, consisting of three periods each having a two minute duration. They will follow FHSAA rules and will be scheduled during normal practice sessions.
6. There will be NO coaching during the wrestle‐offs …by coaches, parents or teammates!! Parents will be allowed to watch the wrestle‐offs.
7. The frequency of wrestle‐offs will be determined by the match schedule. Ideally, wrestle‐offs would be held every week. The coaching staff has the discretion to hold wrestle‐offs on a more or less frequent basis if required.
8. If a seeded wrestler cannot make wrestle‐offs for any reason, the coaches must be notified and that wrestler forfeits the match. He/she must then win the next two matches. This prevents someone from avoiding a challenge in order to keep his position.
9. District Tournament eligibility is determined by the number of matches wrestled and the weight class they were wrestled at. A wrestler who has won every wrestle‐off for the season will not be challenged for the District Tournament. A wrestler who has won the vast majority of the wrestle‐offs will earn his tournament berth by beating his opponent
in the first match of the wrestle‐off. If the wrestler winning the minority of his matches loses the first wrestle‐off, it becomes a best of three (3) series. A wrestler who has not won any wrestle‐offs will not be eligible to challenge for the District Tournament.
10. Once a wrestler has won three (3) consecutive wrestle‐offs against a given challenger, that challenger needs to win two (2) out of three (3) matches if he wins the first match of the next wrestle‐off.

FINAL NOTE
It is ultimately the wrestler’s responsibility to make the weight he challenges at. Failure to do so causes the team to possibly forfeit that class and lose team points as well as depriving another wrestler the opportunity to compete. The coaches reserve the right to impose penalties at their discretion.
